While it sounds quite irregular, it is in fact true: Suzette was in need of, bound and determined to land a fabulously poor husband. In fact, the poorer and more desperate the better, just as long as the gent would be so kind as to give her access to her impressive dowery upon their marriage, for she needed the funds to pay her father’s rather large, rather scandalous gambling debts.
